Dachshund Puppy Training

So the Big Day is here and Dachshund Puppy Training is about to begin early!

Your new Dachshund puppy is in your arms as you step through your front door. As you gently place her on the living room carpet to sniff around she looks at you with those big brown eyes...and suddenly you notice a little wet spot growing on the freshly steam cleaned carpet.

Welcome to the world of Dachshund puppy training!

Training your new Dachshund puppy is an absolute must.

What you do in the first few days, weeks, and months will determine the success of future training and happiness for you and your new dog.

First off, Congratulations! Your new puppy will bring tremendous joy and happiness into your life.

Let's talk about the First Day home.

Your puppy may initially be scared and lonely after being separated from its mother and litter mates. The initial socializing experience must be positive.

Get down to his or her level and gently pet the puppy using soothing words. Don't let small children smother the dog so as not to frighten the puppy any further.

By now you have showered your new puppy with loads of affection. Give him plenty of time to explore his new surroundings, supervised of course, and meet the whole family. Introduce him gently to other pets, again under your close supervision. Your other pets have now made a new friend!

The First Night

Your new Dachshund puppy will be exhausted after a full day of excitement and meeting his new family. Feed him his dinner and get him ready for bedtime in his new, just built for him, puppy crate.

We at Cute-Dachshund-Pictures highly recommend Crate Training . The right sized crate will provide a warm safe den for your puppy to sleep. Crate training ensures that your puppy and your belonging will be safe during the night

Remember, this is probably his first night alone, away from the warmth and comfort of his mother and siblings. More than likely, your puppy will start to whine. If you are lucky, she may fall right asleep, but don't hold your breath. The important thing to remember is BE STRONG! Don't get up to take her out of the crate and soothe her.

I know this sounds harsh, but if you give in know she will learn that whining (and later barking) will get her what she wants every time. It is in her best interest that you ignore the whining and let her fall asleep. She will learn to sleep on her own. It may take a few nights, sometimes longer, but the whining will stop.

Another thing that can help is to have a piece of bedding from her former home that smells of her mother and litter mates. Most breeders will already know this and provide you with a blanket from her first den. This will help soothe the pup at night and make the transition easier on him/her.

We know the first few nights can be stressful, but it is so important to set the nighttime routine early in your puppies life. Unless you want to be waking at 3am to take your puppy out you will especially want to use a crate at night. Ignore the initial whining and your pup and your family will thank you for it later.

Final Thoughts

The key to Dachshund Puppy training is persistence and consistency!

Develop solid routines early for sleeping, feeding, and playtime and you can avoid many of the puppy behavioral problems other dog owners experience.
