The Rainbow of Dachshund Colors
There are many Dachshund colors out there in the "wiener world", but in my opinion they are all beautiful. Sometimes for the average Dachshund fan and owner, it can be difficult to classify the many variations you will find. The classic colors most people will recognize right away, such as red and black and tan. These are the most popular versions and most well-known. The rarer colors and patterns need some more explanation and the true "Dachshund connoisseur" should be familiar with these interesting varieties. Warning: Some of the very unusual Dachshund colors and/or patterns can be a result of less than perfect breeding which may be accompanied by other genetic problems. Buyer Beware!
REDOne of the Classic single colors. Think Dachshund, see red. (Only when your doxie chews your slippers:) The Red can range from a light strawberry blond, to chestnut, to a very deep mahogany red. I love em'. Thanks to Savanna Smiles for this great photograph of Fred the Dachshund.
BLACK AND TAN The black and tan consists of one equal measure Guinness stout ...oh wait, what was I thinking. The next favorite of mine is the lovely Black and Tan Dachshund. These are two-colored Dachshunds consisting of a black body with tan markings around the eyebrows, mouth, legs paws, chest, and tail base to their backside. So CUTE! Thanks to Nao-Cha Photography for this great shot of Cocoa.
THE ENGLISH CREAM Oh Yes, the English Creams. Quite extraordinary in that British stiff upper lip kind of way. Actually not just English but from European and Australian origins, these Dachshunds have quite a following for good reasons. Their coloring is...you guessed it...cream colored. They should have dark noses and dark eyes with a butter or yellowish colored coat. The lighter the better.
Thanks to Angie from Starlight Kennel for this picture of Cameron.
WHEATEN This color is most common in wirehaired Dachshunds. The color is a light yellow color much like wheat. A cream colored wirehair would be classified as a wheaten. Here is an example of a Wheaten Wirehair named Brutus from John Daly. Brutus has a twin brother named Buckeye. Both are one year old and love to chew up toys and beds. Thanks John.
Chocolate Another one-colored Doxie. Chocolate. Plain and simple. More Colors and pictures on the way. Work in progress :)
