Get to know the Three Dachshund Coats, each with their own Personality!Not only do Dachshunds come in different sizes and colors, they also come in three Dachshund Coat types. What a treat for us, huh? These little hot dogs are all about choices. Ketchup only, hold the mustard! THE SMOOTH The smooth Dachshund is what most people think of when you tell them you have a "Dachshund". This sleek, short haired, looking classic is a true Sausage hound. With a smooth, velvety coat that is silky to the touch these guys sure have an attitude. 
Personality and temperament wise, these wieners seem to be the most "free-thinking" of this German breed. Read Stubborn! They know what they want and will do what it takes to get it. Of course, some early training can tame their "persistent puppy" traits, but they may always be a handful. After all, this intelligence is what helped them survive their battles with badgers and help them find their way out of the small tunnels they had dug into. A few other points on the Smooth, Dachshund Coat. Easy to groom with its short hair, an occasional bath and brushing to remove dead skin, these pups will shine in the sun! Speaking of sun, the Smooth is the most vulnerable to weather. Cold and wet are not friends to this sleek Doxie. Low to the ground to begin with, they will fight going outside tooth and nail if the elements are too harsh. Up Next, THE LONG HAIR These noble looking wieners are very elegant looking and have many fans. With long, wavy hair on their ears, legs, tail, and chest the long haired Dachshund is quite regal looking.

One holds that breeders would selectively breed Doxies that possessed the recessive long haired gene. Others believe that long hairs were bred by crossing smooth Dachshunds with Irish Setters. Regardless as to how these beautiful Dachshunds came about, their personality is more laid back than the other Dachshund coats. This would support the theory they were crossed with the Irish Setter. This laid back elegance comes with a price, however, in the form of higher maintenance. Regular grooming of their long coat is required. When a long haired Dachshund comes out from the groomers,though, Watch out! They look gorgeous and as a result are very popular show dogs. They seem to float across the show floor. Despite their regal nature, long haired Dachshunds excel at racing and make avid hunters. Although, don't tell my Daisy Mae since she thinks she is the biggest, baddest hunter around :)) Sure they don't have the polish of the Smooth, or that royal elegance of the Long hair, but what the Wire Hair Dachshund lacks in soft coat style, they sure make up with personality.
The most recent variety, the Wire Haired Dachshund is a real comedian with lots of energy. Developed in the last century, by crossing smooth Dachshunds with terriers, the wire haired Dachshund was born. Combining the aggressive, working dog heritage of a terrier with the street smarts of the smooth Dachshund, a very formidable hunter resulted. Of course,physically the Wire hair possesses the rough, armour like coat of the terriers that make it very well suited to hunting in thick, rough brush. The Wire Hair has its advantages in the modern day as well. Its coat is virtually shed free and is great for people with allergies. For this Dachshund coat to looks its best, however, they need regular grooming and need to be hand stripped, which is the regular removal of dead coat. Look for more grooming tips later on in our site. All in all the wire haired Dachshund is a scrappy, lovable wiener dog that isn't shy. They will keep you on your toes and keep the grooming business alive.
